NEW YORK, ONTARIO & WESTERN RAILWAY’S - SCRANTON DIVISION VHS

Tour O&W’s 55 mile long Scranton Division from the station in Cadosia, NY to the CNJ Station in Scranton, PA. Followed by the Capouse Branch from Dickson City to Austin Heights. Lakeside’s cameras ride over portions of the former roadbed and on-board a NYO&W F-unit wearing the famous gray, yellow & orange paint scheme. What O&W rails remain in place? Stop at all stations along the way and many historical sites as well. Learn how the public was talked into funding the construction of the railroad by two questionable legislators, a debt that was not fully repaid until the 1970’s. How did the discovery of anthracite affect northeast Pennsylvania? Bluestone was a commodity then as it is now. Dairy products and ice played an important role on a daily basis. Why didn’t the original snow fences work? How did the NYS&W come to have trackage in Lackawanna County so far from their main line? Although the railroad is best known for the Mount Ararat grade, the real roller coaster ride was the Capouse Branch. The O&W would use DLW rail to serve one mine while passing by another without providing service. Several stations and structural remains still exist. Videotaped during 1996 and 1997. 118 Minutes, Narrated
