Santa Fe's Chillicothe Subdivision is a double-tracked ribbon of rail that plays host to a daily regimen of high speed railroad drama. Departing the congestion of the greater Chicagoland area, the tracks stretch out across the state of Illinois to pass through lush, green fields of corn and soybeans. The rails beat a path through small towns as trains dash across the state toward the Mississippi River at Fort Madison, Iowa. The Chillicothe Sub is home to Santa Fe's hottest trains, and the beautiful warbonnet paint is prominently displayed and never looked better. Flashy red and silver locomotives lead high priority trains through scenes that were captured just days before Santa Fe's merger with the Burlington Northern.
Starting in Chicago at Corwith Yard, our tour takes you over the entire route to Iowa. Stops are made at favorite locations such as McCook Junction, Joliet Union Station, and Streator. Several trains are viewed at Edelstein Hill, the line's most famous location. We visit two places where Santa Fe and Burlington Northern tracks cross over one another; one at Galesburg and one at Cameron. At the end of the subdivision in Fort Madison, two trains are seen crossing the Mississippi River on the railroad's impressive bridge. The journey concludes as two trains arrive to change crews at the yard. The Chillicothe Sub is an exciting place to view Santa Fe action. Join us on this tour of the line as we take you Across The Heartland.
