Sand Patch Grade in north central Pennsylvania is a window on the past. Old and new railroad technologies are intermingled on this scenic, but remote piece of American Railroading.
A former B&O line, the Mainline Subdivision is part of the CSX's Chicago-to-Baltimore mainline. You'll experience the daily battle of trains fighting their way upgrade through places like Brackens, Fairhope, Falls Cut Tunnel, Glencoe, the horseshoe curve at Mance, Sand Patch, and others.
You'll see a variety of motive power at work on Sand Patch, including the CSX F-units, GP-30s, GP-40s, SD-50s and more in an assortment of paint schemes such as the B&O, C&O, Clinchfield, and Seaboard.
In the former B&O tower at Hyndman, you'll experience vintage armstrong levers that are still in daily use. We'll also visit busy SA tower at the crest of Sand Patch Summit.
Pentrex brings you another tape on first class railroading, as CSX trains battle their way over the scenic Allegheny Mountains. This former B&O line is rich in history but also abounds in big time contemporary railroading.
