The Pacific Electric Railway, once the largest interurban railway in the nation, served Southern California's transportation needs for over sixty years. Yet by the 1950s, the automobile and the Los Angeles Freeway system had reduced the Pacific Electric's rail passenger service to only five lines.
Here is your change to re-live the twilight years of the Pacific Electric passenger and freight service. You'll see the last of the once-famous Hollywood cars on the Watts Local, and the Big Red Cars, often referred to as "blimps," on the Long Beach, San Pedro, Bellflower, and Catalina Lines.
You'll also see a number of memorable railfan trips on the remaining system, and the tower cars in action on the four-track mainline. Then you'll witness the last of the electric freight locomotives, or "Juice Jacks," in action on Santa Monica Boulevard and in the Butte Street Yards.
The fading glory of the mighty Pacific Electric Railway system has been exceptionally captured on 16mm film by noted rail photographer Bruce Ward. Join Pentrex for an unforgettable and historic journey back to Pacific Electric's twilight years.
