STATEN ISLAND'S RAPID TRANSIT DVD

New York City's Borough of Staten Island (Richmond County) is only part of the great metropolis without subway service. However, since the 1860's a railroad did exist on the island, later connected by bridge to New Jersey and owned by the B&O Railroad. Passenger service to the ferries connected Staten Island the the other boroughs. This film, recorded by Gary Grahl and friends using a Super 8 camera portrays the historic railroad and its progress under the MTA.

The rail cars shown are both the 1925 standards and the newer R44's. The program was shot during the grade elimination projects and shows all stops on the SIRT. You will see most stations both before and after renovations. Also shown, in B&W, are the South Beach and North Shore lines.
